South Wales hard man Geraint Hill sees the forthcoming heavyweight ‘Prizefighter’ as a stepping stone to a possible dream fight with an English rugby legend!
Bare-knuckle boxing bosses have confirmed the 32-year-old from Abercynon is in the line up for their heavyweight ‘Prizefighter’ at London’s Indigo at O2 Arena on Saturday, September 12. Four fighters will fight out for a £5,000 prize in two semi-finals followed by the final, with the winner decided on the night.
For Hill, it will be his bare-knuckle boxing debut having previously competed in MMA. He lost a European title challenge in Swansea in his last fight and says he would return to the cage for a fight with James Haskell. The former England rugby international has signed up to fight for Bellator and Hill said: “That’s a fight I want. “I’ve called him out, but the reality is that for his first few fights he will be fighting novices and I’ve already had nine. “They will have to match him with opponents at his level, but once he’s had a few maybe it could happen. “I’m sure all the Welsh rugby fans would be supporting me !”
Hill hopes to take big support with him to London for ‘Prizefighter’ – and millions more will be tuning in to watch on television around the world. “Fighting at the O2 is massive for me,” he said. “I will be able to tell my daughters (11-year-old Emily and nine-year-old Nadine) one day that daddy fought there in front of all those people. “This is the opportunity I’ve been waiting for and if I can put on two good performances and entertain the crowd, it could lead to big fights in bare-knuckle boxing.”
Hill, who works as a civil engineer, says his new sport should suit him. “I’m known as a stand-up fighter in MMA,” he said. “I usually finish fights with my fists. “When I saw they were looking for new bare-knuckle fighters I decided to drop them a line and now I’m getting ready to fight for my biggest ever payday at a great arena.”
